The New Trier High School sailing team won the International School
of MN Team Racing Regatta this past weekend beating teams from Lake
Forest High School, Minnetonka High School (MN) and 6 other high
schools. Sailing on New Trier's winning squad was Stephanie Hudson
(Sr.), Drew Shea (Jr.), Michael Cornew (Sr.), Cole Rice (Soph.),
Amy Baxter (Sr.), Kim Johnson (Jr) and Scott Bartuska (Jr).
The New Trier team won the regatta with a strong performance over
two days and 17 races, winning all of its races. Lake Forest High
School's team took second place with a 13-4 record. Sailing for
Lake Forest was Will Haeger (Jr.), Maxime Deguime (Sr.), Ian Schappe
(Jr.), Lindsey Taylor (Jr.), Connor Adams (Jr.), Katie Hall (Soph.),
Alex Woloshyn (Fr.). Other teams competing were Milwaukee YST (Oconomowoc
HS, Trinity HS), White Bear/St Thomas, Wayzata HS, Blake School,
Hopkins HS and Big
Foot (WI).
From
Coach Gordy Bowers
The ice officially went off Lake Minnetonka April 13. We were able
to get out to the Lighthouse Island and get most of the 420s rigged.
The next day we put in docks and started practice. The regatta was
held Saturday and Sunday April 18-19. It was only possible due to
much hard work by our sailors, parents and volunteers.
Participation has risen dramatically
from six teams two years ago to twelve teams this year. Twelve is
the number of teams at a Baker National Championship. The winds
were northerly both days at around 4-12mph. Saturday we were able
to sail a full schedule of 66 races starting at 10am and ending
at 6:30pm. We had to re-order food! Sunday we were able to get in
a full set of races for gold, silver and bronze. Many thanks are
due to our PRO David Gross and his team of John Peterson, Dan Crear,
Willie Crear, Bruce Martinson and Steve Bernstein for the long hours
on the water.
The winner was New Trier High School
with a perfect record of all wins. They are setting a high standard
for all other teams in our district. Second was Lake Forest. All
of the teams improved dramatically over the weekend which is the
reason we worked so hard to put on a team racing regatta of this
size. Congratulations to all the competitors.

Due
to the timing of Spring Breaks and a sailing clinic on the west
coast, ten teams arrived at the High School Invitational Regatta
representing six schools. Unlike the previous weekend, sunny skies
and 50 degree air temperatures greeted the sailors on Saturday morning.
Easterly winds were light and variable for the event. Read

Eighty five high school sailors traveled to Chicago during the final

35 degree Lake Michigan water temperatures typical of this time
of year, the teams arrived for the first regatta of the spring MISSA
season representing Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin
area high schools. Read

Another season is complete and ice has formed on all our lakes.
It is incredibly cold all over the Midwest and rumor has it that
